Fields

Fields are a type of Persistent Effect that create a lasting area of influence. A Field can be static (anchored to a location) or dynamic (projected as an Aura around a creature or object). Fields may enhance allies, hinder enemies, or create environmental effects that persist over time.

Each Field includes two defining traits: Type and Field Strength. These determine how it interacts with other Fields in overlapping areas.

Field Strength

A Field's strength determines its effectiveness and its ability to override or coexist with other Fields. This strength may be a fixed value or determined by a roll (such as a skill check).

If a Field's strength is variable, the value must be determined before the start of each round. When multiple Fields overlap, the strongest Field typically determines which effect applies in that area.

Field Type

Every Field possesses a Type that governs its interaction with other Fields. Fields also have one or more Subtypes.

Field Type is presented in the following format:

Type Field [Subtype(s)]

Examples:

  • Rhythmic Field [Galliard] — Type is Rhythmic; Galliard is the SubType.
  • Elemental Field [Cold, Earth] — Type is Elemental; Cold and Earth are both Subtypes.

If a Field has multiple subtypes, it is treated as possessing all of them. Interactions with other Fields are resolved in the most favorable way, harmonizing with as many other Fields as possible.

Overlapping Field Interactions

When Fields overlap, their behavior depends on their Type and Field Strength.

Fields with Different Types

Fields with different Types do not interfere with each other. Their effects apply normally, even in overlapping areas.

Fields with the Same Type and Same Subtype (Harmonious Fields)

Fields with the same Type and Subtype are harmonious. Their effects stack and function normally in overlapping areas. When resolving interactions, treat all harmonious Fields as a single group with a shared Field Strength equal to the highest strength among them.

Fields with the Same Type and Different Subtypes (Discordant Fields)

Fields with the same Type but different Subtypes are discordant and interfere with one another. In overlapping areas:

  • Only the Field with the highest Field Strength applies.
  • If two or more discordant Fields have equal Field Strength, their effects are suppressed in the overlapping area—no Field effect applies.
