Acquiring Spells

Certain character classes, such as the Wizard, can learn and store spells in a spell book for later memorization. These characters gain some spells for free throughout their career, but they can also acquire spells while adventuring. One way a character can obtain new spells is by finding them: either as part of a secret treasure hoard, in a long-forgotten library, or in a fallen enemy's spell book. Another way to acquire spells is by purchasing them from another wizard, a learning institution, a curio shop, or a similar source.

Cost of Spells

There are two costs associated with purchasing Spells, the cost of access to the spell and the material cost of copying the spell into your Spell Book. The Access Cost of a spell is generally based on the Rank of the Spell and can be determined using the following formula:

There are two costs associated with purchasing spells: the access cost of the spell and the material cost of copying it into your spell book. The access cost of a spell is generally based on its rank and is calculated as follows:

Access Cost = [Rank of Spell]2 x 10gp

The access cost applies only when the spell is purchased, not when it is acquired by other means. However, the material cost to copy the spell (described below) is required whenever you add the spell to your spell book.

Copying a spell into your spell book requires magical ink. Magical ink costs approximately 10 gp per page, and a spell requires twice as many pages as its rank. The total ink cost can be calculated with the following formula:

Ink Cost of Spell = [Rank of Spell] x 20gp
